How Does Rhino Shield Perform on Cedar?_by Ted Starmack

Will Rhino Shield Adhere to Cedar Exterior Wood?

Many people have expressed concerns about coating cedar wood because cedar does not hold paint very well.

Home with T1-11 Siding

I can assure you that Rhino Shield will adhere to cedar, be it lap boards, T1-11, or cedar shakes.  We do use a different primer that is formulated to bond to the wood and not be repelled by the oils in the cedar.  The application will carry the same 25-year warranty against any flaking , chipping, cracking, or peeling.

Will Rhino Shield Keep Out the Woodpeckers?

Woodpeckers can do a great deal of damage to a home.  They are usually attracted by a food source.  There are often grubs or wood boring bee larva in the wood and the woodpeckers are there to enjoy the buffet.  Once they have created a hole between the size of a golf ball and a baseball there is enough room for nesting.

How we deal with this is to fill all the woodpecker and insect holes with our resin.  Once the Rhino Shield is applied and cured, the ceramic coating provides a protective layer that seals out the insects. Without the food source, the woodpeckers move elsewhere.

Can You Guarantee the Woodpeckers Will Not Come Back?

Although the warranty does not cover damage by living creatures, we do offer this protection.  If the insects or woodpeckers persist, we will make a one-time service call, at no charge, to repair the damage.  We have done numerous houses with different levels of woodpecker damage and we have not yet gotten that call.  I am confident that Rhino Shield will resolve your woodpecker problem.

Do I Need to Hire a Contractor to Make the Repairs Before Getting Rhino Shield?

We have some experienced carpenters available on our crews.  We can handle minor to extensive wood replacement.

If the wood is cracked or pulling away from the wall, but still has its structural integrity, we can do one of two things.  We can either treat the existing wood (fill cracks and voids with resin, screw bowed wood back into place) or replace it with new wood.

If the wood is rotten, spongy, and has a high moisture content, It will need to be replaced.

Any wood replacement will be done by the crew for the cost of the materials and a nominal service fee, typically $6 per lineal foot.
