Painting v Rhino Shield v Siding _ by Ted Starmack

Nearly half of the people I meet are at the beginning of their journey.  They know that they need to do something to improve the exterior appearance of their home, but there are so many choices.  Which is the best choice for them.

In most cases, they have older Aluminum or vinyl siding and are considering the options.  Should they paint it, coat it with Rhino Shield or replace it with new vinyl or cement board siding.

Let’s investigate all of these options based on 3 criteria, Durability, color options, and cost.

Durability

The paints that they make today are nothing like paints from 20 or 30 years ago.  I like to say, “They have taken out all of the bad stuff that made it good.”  A coat of exterior paint today is expected to last 3 to 5 years.

Replacing older siding with new vinyl siding should be thought through very carefully.  If you have aluminum siding that is not badly dented, then replacing it with newer vinyl siding can be a major step backwards.  Like today’s paints, the vinyl siding is being made with fewer chemicals that added flexibility and color retention to the vinyl.  It is more likely to be damaged in a storm than the older vinyl.

Rhino Shield is a ceramic based coating that comes with a 25-year warranty against any flaking, chipping, blistering, cracking or peeling.  It is resistant to abrasion as well as mold, mildew and algae.  It is engineered to withstand gale force storms.

Installing cement board siding is a very durable material that will stand up to the harshest weather conditions also.  But you must be aware that this material requires painting.  Even the “Prefinished” line will need to be painted in about 8 years.

Color Options

Paint offers the most color options,by far. Just about any color you can imagine can be mixed in a paint.

Siding manufacturers typically have 8 to 12 colors to chose.  4 are standard colors like White, Clay, etc, and the others are more designer colors that go in and out of fashion.  (This is coming from a guy who lived in an Avocado sided house.)

Rhino Shield is available in 1,500 colors, so there is a very wide variety of choices.  When coating over existing vinyl siding, it is recommended to choose a color that is no darker than the existing siding.

Hardie Board is available unfinished, to be painted, or in 14 prefinished colors.

The Cost

A house with 2,000 square feet of exterior wall surface should cost between $6,500 and 8,000 to have painted.

Vinyl siding prices vary widely based upon the contractor and the quality of materials used.  A house with an exterior wall surface area of 2,000 square feet can range between $6,000 and $25,000.

Having Rhino Shield applied to the same size sided  house would cost between $12,000 and $13,000.

The average cost for Hardie Board Siding installed for the same house=se is $19,000 to $28,000.
